Hospitality Fundamentals Program

This program has been approved by the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills & Training.

The Hospitality Fundamentals Program includes six courses developed by the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute and gives students the real world knowledge and skills needed for a long-term career in the hospitality industry. The program provides an understanding about the hospitality industry as a whole, as well as courses in MS Word Core, MS Excel Core, Business Communication, and Customer Service.

AHLEI six course Hospitality Fundamentals Certificate, as well as certificates for: Hospitality Today, Supervision in the Hospitality Industry, Management of Food and Beverage, Managing Front Office, Managing Housekeeping, and Managing Service in Food and Beverage. CVTC Hospitality Fundamentals Certificate.

Upon successful completion of the program, the student should have learned all the different skills required for employment in the Front Office, Food and Beverage, or Rooms Divisions of a typical lodging operation. This includes providing excellent Guest Services, Check-in/Check-out duties, Housekeeping, or food service support.

Grade 12 or equivalent or mature student status. Successfully complete the admissions interview and passing an entrance test. Must be living in Canada.

Classes are scheduled for a mandatory five hours per day, five days a week. Class time is scheduled from 9:00-2:30 daily with additional lab time after class. It is highly recommended that all students plan to spend a minimum of six hours a day at the Centre.

Upon successful completion the graduate is prepared to enter the work force as a Front Desk Clerk, Reservationist, Housekeeper, Bell Service Agent, Restaurant or Banquet Server, or Maintenance person.

Students will be evaluated through assignments and tests. Each CVTC course is marked individually and requires 60% to pass. AHLEI requires 70% to pass its courses and an AHLEI Certificate is provided upon successfully passing the six AHLEI courses.

To be eligible for graduation students must have completed all courses in the program with a minimum passing grade of 60%, meet all attendance and financial requirements.
