Community support worker Program

The Community Support Worker Program prepares the student to work in a variety of
support work positions. This 32-week program provides a foundation of theoretical
knowledge, combined with the workplace knowledge, to support working with
seniors, peoples with disabilities, youth in care, people with substance abuse problems
and addictions, and clients with a variety of other special needs.

Community Support Worker Diploma, First Aid, CPR, Foodsafe, Non-Violent Crisis
Intervention, WHMIS, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training

Upon successful completion of the program students should acquire knowledge and
skills including how to; adhere to professional and ethical behavior, help clients with
their nutritional needs and hygienic care, assist clients in dealing with personal and
social problems, assist seniors or people with disabilities in performing day to day
activities, assist other professionals in providing best care and practice, help youth with
behavioural difficulties, assess clients’ progress, create and maintain accurate and
confidential records, promote the safety and inclusion of all clients, and much more.

Minimum Age 18, Grade 12 or equivalent or mature student status. Participate in the admissions interview. Undertake a criminal record check.

Language Proficiency Requirements:

Option 1: Evidence that 3 years of full-time secondary education (Grades 8-12) or 2 years if the grades are 10, 11 or 12 have been successfully completed in the program’s language of instruction in a country where the language of instruction is one of the principle languages. This may be demonstrated by providing a high school transcript, completion of a BC Adult Graduation program, or providing international education credentials recognized through WES, ICES, or IQAS

OR:
2 years of full-time post-secondary education have been completed in the program’s language of instruction in a country where the language of instruction is one of the principle languages (includes international education credentials recognized through WES, ICES, and IQAS, but language development courses such as ELL coures cannot be included. 

OR (Only when the following is applied):
English is the program’s language of instruction AND the applicant is a mature domestic student facing barriers AND the applicant cannot access their educational records OR cannot provide sufficient evidence of secondary or post-secondary education as outlined in this policy. Students may in this case complete an Accuplacer English Assessment and achieve the following minimum scores:

Reading: 230, and Writing 230, and WritePlacer: 4.

Classes are scheduled for a mandatory six hours per day, four days a week. Class time
is scheduled from 9:00 – 3:30, Tuesday-Friday with additional lab time after class and additional time given on Mondays to complete homework or other work. It is highly reccomended that students spend a minimum of six hours a day at the Centre.
